Top-mounted manway with spring hinge
For a top-mounted manway, Leopold Parts does not use the standard hinge. Instead, a spring hinge is used, where the spring relieves and supports a large part of the cover’s weight. This makes even a heavy cover considerably easier and more controlled to open and close.
The spring hinge is particularly important on the tank top, where the operator would otherwise have to lift the cover upwards. The solution reduces the operating force required and makes routine access easier. Secure footing, sufficient space around the opening and a work procedure that addresses fall and pinch hazards are still essential.
Side-mounted manway
On a side-mounted frame, gravity affects the cover throughout its movement. The hinge must be sized and positioned so that the cover does not swing uncontrollably and the operator can use the closure from a stable working position.
Working environment and heavy lifting
Workplace safety principles emphasise preventing unnecessary manual lifting and demanding working postures through planning, workplace design and suitable technical solutions. A hinged manway can be one such measure because the cover does not have to be handled as a separate heavy load.
